What Happens During a Root Canal?

Once it is decided that you will proceed with a root canal, our team will administer local anesthesia to numb your mouth and make sure you remain comfortable. If sedation dentistry is needed, you may inquire.

We’ll then isolate the tooth using a dental dam, keeping nearby teeth and gums protected against any surgical instruments. After making a small opening in the crown of the tooth, we will begin to clear away any infected or damaged areas of the internal tooth structure. Not only will we remove the pulp, but we’ll make sure no bacteria remain inside the canals as well.

Once the tooth is cleared, we will fill it with gutta-percha, which is a biocompatible substance, sealing the tooth to prevent reinfection. We’ll then have a customized dental crown made to fit over the weakened tooth so that it will grow stronger.
